“Botanical Supplement for Muscle Synthesis: the GH-Stimulating Effects of Chlorophytum Borivilianum and Velvet Bean in Exercise-Trained Men”

by Acupuncture Journal Staff

Growth hormone (GH) is a vital hormone synthesized and secreted by the anterior pituitary gland, responsible for the growth of essentially all tissues of the body, including bone. Its primary influence is its anabolic effect on bodily tissues, including growth, cell reproduction, and regeneration. GH is also responsible for regulating the metabolism of the body. GH is released intermittently, erratic and unpredictable with no reliable or recognizable pattern, and various external factors influence GH release patterns, such as age, sex, sleep, nutritional status, alcohol consumption, and exercise [1][2][3].

An investigational dietary supplement containing the active ingredients Chlorophytum borivilianum and Velvet bean has been developed, as they have been suggested to provide a stimulatory effect on GH release. Chlorophytum borivilianum, also known as Safed Musli, is a tropical herb with many therapeutic applications within Ayurvedic medicine, and Velvet bean, also known as Mucuna pruriens, is a climbing legume that also has its heritage in Ayurvedic medicine [4]. Chlorophytum Borivilianum and Velvet bean have been reported to offer health-enhancing effects believed within the Ayurvedic system to be associated with an increase in GH output [5][6].

An acute ingestion of the investigational dietary supplement containing the active ingredients Chlorophytum borivilianum and Velvet bean results in an increase in circulating GH in exercise-trained men [7]. This study aimed to determine the impact of the supplement on circulating GH concentrations in healthy, exercise-trained men. The study found that the acute ingestion of the supplement resulted in a significant increase in circulating GH levels in the subjects tested [7].

In conclusion, the investigational dietary supplement containing Chlorophytum borivilianum and Velvet bean has shown promising results in stimulating GH release, which has potential health and performance benefits. The increase in GH can help with muscle synthesis, making Velvet bean a potentially beneficial supplement for exercise-trained individuals.
